DENTURES – COMPLETE & PARTIAL

Your teeth perform numerous essential functions every day. They help you to bite and chew your food. They control the flow of air while you speak, helping you to form certain words and sounds. Your teeth even provide you with a beautiful smile. Tooth loss can have a major impact on your life. National Dental Williston Park can help with complete dentures and partial dentures.

What Causes Tooth Loss?

Tooth loss can happen for a variety of different reasons. One of the most common causes of tooth loss is a gum (periodontal) disease. A buildup of plaque and oral bacteria irritate your gum tissue. When this happens, your gums begin to swell. Pockets form between your gums and your teeth, and bacteria fall into them. The bacteria attack your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone, weakening them. Eventually, your teeth become loose and fall out.

Other causes of tooth loss include:

  • Bruxism (grinding and clenching your teeth).
  • Facial trauma (car accidents, sports injuries).
  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Smoking.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth used to replace missing teeth. They have been used for hundreds of years. Today’s dentures, however, are significantly different from their ancestors. They are even different from the dentures of just a few decades ago. Technological developments have allowed us to create dentures that are both more natural in appearance and more comfortable.

Dentures consist of acrylic resin teeth that are set into a hard, acrylic base. The base can be made to match the color of your natural gum tissue, allowing it to blend in better.

The base of the dentures is designed to be supported by your gums and held in place by suction.

Complete Dentures Vs Partial Dentures

If you are missing all of the teeth in a single arch (or you are missing all of the teeth in your mouth), complete dentures may be right for you. If you have any teeth remaining, but they are unhealthy, they will need to be extracted first. Molds are taken of your mouth, which is used to design and create your custom fit dentures.

Partial dentures, on the other hand, are designed to replace sections of consecutive missing teeth. Much like complete dentures, they are created from molds of your mouth. They are supported by your gums, but they also have metal clasps, which hook to your healthy teeth, acting as additional support.

How Do I Care for My Dentures?

Dentures require a bit of extra care each day. Every night, they should be removed for cleaning. They should be brushed with a soft bristled brush and denture paste (or soap and water). Then, they should be left to soak overnight in a denture cleaning solution. Before you go to bed, you should then use a soft bristled brush to brush your gums, any remaining teeth, and your other oral tissues. In the morning, brush again, then rinse your dentures off and replace them in your mouth.

Benefits of Dentures

There are several benefits of dentures:

  • You can enjoy all of your favorite foods again.
  • Your speech is restored.
  • You get your beautiful smile back.
  • The shape of your face is restored, which can take years off of your appearance.
