Your teeth do a lot for you every day. They make eating possible by biting your food and chewing it well. They allow you to form certain words and sounds by controlling your airflow. They even provide you with a beautiful smile. Any imperfections, no matter how small, can dull your smile, and have a major impact on your confidence. At National Dental Williston Park, we can fix minor imperfections in your teeth with veneers.
What are Veneers?
Even small imperfections can have a serious effect on your smile. Veneers, which are thin shell-like restorations, are a cosmetic solution to these imperfections. Veneers are made to cover the front portion of the visible teeth when you smile.
Types of Veneers
Veneers are typically made of composite resin or porcelain. Both of these materials can blend in with the color of the rest of your teeth. At National Dental, we use porcelain veneers. Porcelain is stronger than composite resin (which is quite susceptible to damage). Porcelain also better mimics the properties of your enamel. It can be stained and finished to perfectly match the exact color of your surrounding teeth. It also reflects light much like enamel does, giving it a more natural shine.
Placing Your Veneers
The process for placing your veneers typically takes two visits. During the first visit, we prepare your teeth. This involves removing just a small amount of your enamel. In doing so, your veneers can fit much more naturally in with the rest of your teeth. We then take impressions of your mouth. These impressions are sent to a lab, where your custom veneers are designed and created.
It can take up to two weeks for your veneers to be ready. We may provide you with temporary veneers, but these are not always necessary. Once your veneers are ready, we will check them for fit and set them in place. To do this, we use a lightly acidic gel to create a rough texture on the surface of your teeth. This helps to create a stronger bond, and hold your veneers securely in place. We wash the gel away and dry the tooth. Finally, we use a special bonding agent and set your veneers in place.
Do Veneers Require Special Care?
Veneers should be cared for just like the rest of your natural teeth. You should continue to brush at least twice a day and floss every day. While your veneers cannot develop cavities, they can still collect plaque and bacteria responsible for gum disease. Cavities can also form in the areas of your teeth that are not covered by your veneers. Avoid biting down on anything too hard, such as popcorn kernels, ice, and your fingernails. You should also avoid using your teeth to tear open packaging.
It is also important to maintain your regular dental visits for cleanings and exams. During these visits, we clean your teeth and your veneers. We also inspect your natural teeth and your veneers for signs of damage. By spotting damage early, we can take measures to prevent it from growing worse.
