Not a Good Dental Implant Candidate

There are very few things that would stop you from being a good candidate for dental implants, for example, the following can create issues with treatment:

  • Patients with poor oral health, including extensive gum disease
  • Patients who are in poor health overall
  • Patients who do not have the adequate jaw bone to support the implant

Implants are generally avoided in children who have not finished growing their jawbone yet. Before implants are determined as the right treatment, it’s important to undergo a full assessment by a dental implant professional.

The Ideal Dental Implant Candidate

Ideally, those who are qualified to have dental implants don’t smoke, are committed to caring for the implants correctly and have adequate jaw bone to support the implant. Because the titanium rod (implant) is placed directly in the jawbone and mimics the natural tooth’s root, the jaw must be able to support the rod.

Those who smoke may still be able to have implants placed, but nicotine can impact the way the bone heals. Those with limited jawbone can also have a bone graft done before implants are placed, but this is a procedure you should discuss with your dentist.

While these factors can affect your candidacy, they don’t always exclude patients. If you are in good health and are prepared to make the investment in implants, we are happy to schedule an appointment with our dental implant specialists for you to determine if this is the right treatment option for you. Contact us at National Dental today to start your journey to a beautiful smile.
