Dentistry for Kids
Just like you, the health of your child’s mouth is important. They should be brushing their teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily as well. They should also have professional dental cleanings and oral exams at least twice a year. These cleanings and exams are an essential part of preventing serious oral health issues or detecting and treating issues in their earliest stages. However, your child’s mouth is continuously developing (and will not stop until the late teen years) and requires special care. At National Dental Williston Park, we provide the care your child needs with dentistry for kids.
Cleanings and ExamsAt National Dental, we recommend that your child have at least two cleanings and exams each year, just like you. With a dental cleaning, we scrape the surfaces of your child’s teeth, removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria. Their teeth are polished using an electric handpiece and special abrasive polish.
Following your child’s cleaning, we then perform an oral exam. We look over your child’s teeth, checking for signs of damage and cavities. We will inspect their gums for signs of gum disease (redness and swelling). The alignment of their jaw is assessed. Once we have looked over your child’s mouth, we will discuss with them (and you, depending on their age) regarding their oral habits. We will provide tips to prevent cavities and improve brushing. We will also take the time to answer any questions that your child, or you, might have.
Fluoride TreatmentsEnamel is a naturally occurring element in teeth. It is lost throughout the day, but the enamel can be remineralized. This can be done in a variety of ways – fluoridated water, certain foods, toothpaste. Children, however, don’t often get the necessary amount of fluoride. Our fluoride treatments are simple, quick and painless. We apply a gel to the surface of your child’s teeth, and the fluoride is absorbed into the enamel. This protects your child’s teeth from acid attacks by oral bacteria and protects emerging permanent teeth.
Dental SealantsThe chewing surfaces of your child’s molars contain deep crevices and grooves. These spaces easily collect lingering food particles and oral bacteria. They are also often harder for your child to keep clean. The buildup in these areas can quickly lead to cavities. Sealants are a quick, simple procedure used to cover these crevices, preventing buildup, and making your child’s teeth easier to clean. We use a special, lightly acidic gel to create a rough texture on your child’s teeth. This texture will help the sealant material to adhere better. The sealants, made up of plastics and other materials, are painted onto the teeth and dried with a special light. Sealants can last for several years.
Dental X-RaysX-rays are an important part of your child’s oral health care plan. They allow us to see the hidden areas of your child’s mouth. With them, we can detect cavities between their teeth. We can monitor the development of their jawbone, and watch emerging permanent teeth. X-rays allow us to spot issues in their early stages so that we can take action right away to prevent serious problems from occurring later.
Early OrthodonticsThe American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. This evaluation is done to assess your child’s need for orthodontic treatment later in life. Some issues can present themselves as early as two years of age. In some cases, we can take action sooner, preventing more invasive treatments later. We may even be able to prevent the need for orthodontic treatment in later years altogether.
