For many years, your options available for replacing missing teeth were very limited. Today, however, dental implants have provided you with an alternative to traditional tooth replacement options, providing several benefits over these options. In many cases, when you get dental implants, you have to wait months before you get your permanent replacement teeth. At National Dental Williston Park, we can provide you with your replacement teeth the same day as your surgical procedure.
What are Dental Implants?Dental implants involve the use of small titanium rods that we surgically place into your jawbone. As you heal from surgery, your jawbone fuses to the titanium rods, essentially turning them into stable “roots” that will then support your replacement teeth.
Implants are extremely customizable and can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, from a single tooth to all of them. To fit your needs, we provide several types of implants:
Getting Your Teeth Same DayTypically, when undergoing dental implant surgery, you are provided with a set of temporary teeth, which provide function while you heal. Healing from implant surgery can take several weeks to several months, and you wear these temporary teeth the entire time. Then, once you have healed, we begin the process of placing your permanent teeth. Abutments, or connectors, are placed on the exposed ends of your dental implants. Impressions of your mouth are taken and then sent to a lab. The impressions are used to design and create your customized teeth. It can take up to two weeks for your teeth to be ready, so the temporary teeth are set back into place. Once your teeth are ready, they are screwed into place on the implants.
With same day teeth, temporary teeth are a thing of the past. Instead, you get your fully functioning permanent teeth the same day you undergo implant surgery. This is possible thanks to technological developments in the dental field. Rather than fabricating your teeth after surgery, they are fabricated beforehand. We use the ICAT machine to take a 3-dimensional image of your mouth. This image provides us with 1:1 measurements of your mouth. We can use this image to both plan your surgery and design your replacement teeth.
Once your implants have been designed, we then move on to fabricating your teeth. The information from your computer-aided design (CAD) is sent to a milling machine (computer-aided manufacturing, or CAM, technology). This is where your teeth are fabricated. They are ready and waiting for you when you arrive for surgery. As soon as your gums are stitched closed, your permanent teeth are screwed into place.
Benefits of Same Day TeethThe benefits of same day teeth are the same as regular dental implants. They provide you with a permanent solution to tooth loss. All of the functions of your teeth are restored. Implants are more comfortable, and much easier to care for. They also help to keep your jawbone strong. With same day teeth, you also have the added benefit of leaving your surgical appointment with your fully functional permanent teeth.
