Aesthetic Gum Lift
What comes to mind when you think about the perfect smile? If you’re like many other people, you think about the condition of your teeth. Bright white, perfectly straight, blemish-free teeth are considered to be the attributes of a perfect smile. However, even if your teeth have all of these attributes, your smile still may be lackluster. Your gums play an integral role in the quality of your smile as well. When you have excess gum tissue, it can make your teeth appear small (known as a “gummy” smile). At National Dental Williston Park, we can help to achieve a beautiful smile with an aesthetic gum lift.
What is an Aesthetic Gum Lift?An aesthetic gum lift, or crown lengthening, is a dental procedure that is designed to remove the excess gum tissue that is causing your teeth to appear small and affecting the quality of your smile. It restores your teeth to a more normal size and provides you with an even gum line. Depending on your circumstances, we may also need to remove a small amount of bone as well.
How is an Aesthetic Gum Lift Performed? The procedure for an aesthetic gum lift is done under a local anesthetic and takes just one single visit to complete. The time it takes to complete your procedure depends on your specific circumstances, such as how many teeth are being corrected and if you need to have any bone removed. For years, an aesthetic gum lift was performed using a scalpel. A scalpel is an effective tool, but it has a few drawbacks. It causes bleeding during your procedure. It can also lead to a significant amount of pain and swelling during your recovery period.
At National Dental Williston Park, we perform your aesthetic gum lift using laser dentistry. The laser uses a high-intensity light beam, which is approximately the same thickness as a human hair. It is also extremely accurate. As we cut away the excess gum tissue, it cauterizes your blood vessels, limiting your bleeding. Because it is so accurate, it minimizes tissue trauma, helping to minimize pain and swelling while you heal.
We start by administering a local anesthetic. Next, we make incisions in your gum tissue, exposing the roots of your teeth and the bone. We make the necessary cuts to remove the excess tissue and remove any bone, if necessary. When we are finished, we stitch your gums back up snugly against your teeth.
Other Uses for a Gum LiftGum lifts can be used for more than just aesthetics. This procedure also has a functional purpose as well. If you have a damaged tooth, crowns are a common treatment. However, excess gum tissue can prevent the crown from sitting properly on the affected tooth, leaving it susceptible to infections. A gum lift can be used to remove the excess tissue, exposing more surface area of your tooth. Your crown can then be placed effectively.
A gum lift can also be used in the event of a cavity at the gum line. By removing excess gum tissue, we can properly clean the cavity and place the filling so that it effectively protects your tooth.
